Speed to Market and Scaling an MGA – Five Questions with Volt UW
Introduction:
Volt UW, a London MGA launched in October 2024, gives brokers a single point of access to insurance for their clients’ renewable and conventional energy assets. The co-founders, two of London’s most prominent power underwriters and a highly experienced MGA manager saw the opportunity. To get the operation up and running without delay, Volt UW turned to DA Strategy for support in areas including:
- UK and EEA regulatory status
- Lloyd’s coverholder approval
- Binder creation and management
- Terms of Business Agreement management
- Regulatory reporting
What inspired the launch of Volt UW, and what was the initial vision?
The energy insurance market has long suffered bifurcation. Some underwriters have an appetite for conventional energy risks, and others for risks in the fast-growing energy transition sector. But most energy producers do both. The big conventional generators are typically also leaders in the development of green technologies, from wind and solar to hydrogen. So, to obtain complete coverage, they have needed the support of multiple underwriters.
Volt UW’s founders set out to bridge this division by launching an MGA which delivers both broad types of coverage from a single office. The founders began with a best-in-class team of London insurance leaders in the power generation sector.
The timing was right, given the stable market environment, and the growth and profitability of the energy insurance market as a whole, and the transition market in particular. Alternative energy supply is experiencing unprecedented, rising investment levels, on a global scale. Volt UW seeks to insure traditional producers and the new technologies that are coming on stream, both at their construction phase and during operations.
The London-based MGA has begun by offering Property Physical Damage and Business Interruption coverage, as the first building-block of a multi-product strategy. The founders’ intent is to offer multiple relevant products to clients in the energy sector through a market-leading, tech enabled, scalable specialty MGA focused on the generation of profitable returns.
How did DA Strategy support Volt UW in achieving speed to market?
DA Strategy (DAS) was instrumental to ensuring Volt UW’s ambitious launch timetable was executed perfectly. The experts at DAS thoroughly understand what it takes to work at pace in supporting start-up ventures and quickly developed a powerful rapport with Volt UW’s co-founders. Their experience showed through.
DAS outlined the key milestones to be reached and the potential bottlenecks on the way. That helped to ensure information was produced and shared ahead of schedule, which underpinned Volt UW’s timely launch. Their contacts and experience dealing with various carrier partners, Lloyd’s, and the regulators were invaluable in the set-up phase and have been beneficial on an ongoing basis.
Crucially, DAS also enabled Volt UW to achieve global market access, ensuring the MGA could operate efficiently across multiple jurisdictions. This included leveraging DA Strategy Global in Germany to secure EEA access. Without DAS, compliance paperwork could still be the reality, rather than leading global energy slips.
What has been the biggest milestone in Volt UW’s growth so far?
It’s difficult to select a ‘biggest’ milestone after just six months, but one clear point is the inception of the initial binder. However, its seamless renewal – with two new markets and 50% more capacity – is equally satisfying. Working through the end-to-end process with markets and brokers, DAS helped to ensure that everyone involved in the process understood their roles and responsibilities at every step of the way.
Hiring new people has been another huge highlight. Volt UW have already brought in some of the market’s most experienced underwriters, including Tom Nooth-Cooper and Louis Scott, and some superb support staff. Volt UW expects to announce more shortly, in support of their first product extension.
What are Volt UW’s ambitions for 2025 and beyond?
They’re significant, broadly foreseeable, and all achievable. Volt UW will expand their Power & Utilities offering, whether under additional Delegated Authority arrangements or by adding further sections to their existing binder. Either way, they expect to attract new carriers to support them, although they will always give existing partners the opportunity to support the new best-in-class underwriting teams Volt UW will onboard in 2025 and beyond. They will become a market leader for Power & Utilities clients and their brokers, regardless of the coverage they need.
More generally, their ambition is simple: to be the best-in-class MGA for process, data capture, and underwriting expertise. Volt UW will continue to deliver a perfect balance of human acumen and technology support to create a lean, efficient, service-focused underwriting operation that embraces traditional underwriting approaches whilst exploiting technological advancements to the maximum.
They will achieve that by exploring opportunities to improve processes. For example, Volt UW will be onboarding generative AI to enable greater efficiency, accuracy, and understanding, ultimately to support growth in the business. They will work with leading support partners in all areas outside their core competencies where they can help Volt UW to be the best.
What lessons or insights can be shared from the partnership between Volt UW and DA Strategy?
Start-ups should resist the belief that they can do it all themselves. No doubt they could have muddled through challenges like FCA approval and coverholder authorisation at Lloyd’s, but it makes no sense to do so when you can have people with experience in that specific activity do it for you, freeing up your time for core-strength activities. A plethora of experts exists to help new businesses navigate the complexities of launching an underwriting business. Ignore what they have to offer at your peril.
